About Tresa (Trinity & Savion's Mom)
I am a single mom that thoroughly enjoys being actively involved in the lives of my children. Our journey together has involved 2 natural vaginal births, breastfeeding (ups and downs), cloth diapering and postpartum depression (PPD). And I can say that with each valley the resurfacing to the mountaintop is even more exhilarating than the time before.
Trinity was my first and Savion gave me the pleasure of being my next blessing. Both of my births happened in a hospital setting against my will. When you don’t have the support of your spouse or significant other and don’t know what your REAL options are then you just go with the flow.
I realized that going with the flow just floods you with ‘what ifs’. What if I would have given myself the opportunity to let my body do what it was fashioned to do? What if I had the ability to move around and find more comfortable positions because being on my back was not it? What if I had the ability to birth in water to possibly offset some of my pain? What if I could have walked around my own house or a birthing center adhering to my bodies need to adjust for this new life entering this world?
Instead of allowing my ‘what ifs’ to take over I have decided to become a Birthing Advocate and Postpartum Doula for other moms in order to eliminate any doubt they may have and to ensure them that being tied to the medical politics is not an option they necessarily have to indulge in.
I do agree, that high risk moms should ensure proper immediate treatment via the hospital setting but you may be able to experience more natural experiences like a water birth, less monitoring allowing movement, having the necessary support system around to ensure proper comfort for mom and baby. But all women should know their options regarding the birth THEY want and need.
Ultimately it needs to be realized that the United States exercises too many unnecessary medical procedures that are not beneficial to mom and baby. And I want to make sure I can contribute to the Birth Advocacy Community by educating our moms and their families on what BIRTH really is.
